2015 MGA Season is around the corner!

The golf season has almost arrived; I feel it getting closer all the time. The reason that I feel this way is because of a couple of facts: the Kansas City and St Louis Golf Shows are happening this month and that is usually the kickoff to get the golfers’ minds back on the game. Also with the PGA Tour now in full swing we’re seeing the best players in the world battle it out each week. Oh, and entries recently opened up for our popular Porto Cima 4 Ball. We are inside of 60 days for the first round of this event! With that being said, things here at the MGA are really starting to pick up and I am ready to see people out playing the great game of golf! At the beginning of the New Year we announced the 2015 Missouri Golf Association and the Missouri Women’s Golf Association Championship Schedule. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of the Missouri Golf Association, we are pleased to announce our 2015 MGA Schedule of Events. You will see that again this year we have an outstanding list of MGA member clubs that have agreed to host these prestigious events and Championships! Starting at 9:00 a.m. on March 10th, you may begin entering the 2015 events. Please let us know if you have any questions by contacting the MGA office. You can see the event schedules at mogolf.org and also mowomensga.org Another item that makes me feel the season getting closer is the excitement and the talk of the Champions Tour Event, The Legends at Big Cedar Lodge, launching their ticket sales and volunteer opportunities. The event last year was a huge success, and I can only think that it will be even bigger and better in 2015. The dates of the event are April 22-26. You can go to bassprolegends.com website to purchase your tickets or sign up to volunteer. So, as you can tell, I am ready and geared up for the 2015 season already and cannot wait to see each of you out on the course real soon. Make sure that you go to the mogolf.org website to see all the exciting events and programs we have lined for you all to enjoy!

What's the Nearest Point of Relief

Often times, the term “nearest point of relief” is bantered about and many times people have no idea what you’re talking about. Do you know what the nearest point of relief is? Let’s find out a little bit more about the “nearest point of relief” and how and what it’s used for in the Rules of Golf. As usual, a good starting point is the definition. The definition states in part that “the nearest point of relief is the reference point for taking relief without penalty from interference by an immovable obstruction (Rule 24-2), an abnormal ground condition (Rule 25-1) or a wrong putting green (Rule 25-3).” That being said, the first thing to notice is that the nearest point of relief is used only in taking relief without penalty; cart paths, sprinkler heads, casual water, etc.. It is not used in relief from a water hazard, an unplayable ball or any other Rule where a penalty is involved. The definition goes on to say that the nearest point of relief is “the point on the course nearest to where the ball lies: (i) that is not nearer the hole, and (ii) where, if the ball were so positioned, no interference by the condition from which relief is sought would exist for the stroke the player would have made from the original position if the condition were not there.” Additionally for clarification, the definition includes a note that is a best practice that says “In order to determine the nearest point of relief accurately, the player should use the club with which he would have made his next stroke if the condition were not there to simulate the address position, direction of play and swing for such a stroke.” That sounds complicated so let’s break it down. First, the nearest point of relief is going to be a point that is closest to where the ball originally lies. There may be many points near to where the ball lies, some good and some bad, but the nearest point of relief is going to be the closest. Remember, it’s the nearest point of relief and not the “nicest point of relief”. Secondly, the nearest point of relief can be no nearer the hole. Finally, it is the spot on the course nearest to where the ball lies that if you had theoretically placed it, you would no longer have interference from that cart path, sprinkler head or casual water using the stroke you would have made in the first place. Interference includes lie of ball, stance, area of intended stance or swing and additionally, only when your ball lies on the putting green, intervention on your line of putt. For example, if you were kneeling on the ground to hit a right handed punch shot with a 4-iron from under a tree but your knee was on a sprinkler head, you would mostly likely be entitled to relief. You would then find the spot on the course nearest to where the ball lie, no nearer the hole, that if the ball were so positioned you would no longer have interference from that sprinkler head for a right handed punch shot with a 4-iron while kneeling on the ground. Generally, there is only one spot which is the nearest point of relief. Also, the nearest point of relief may be some distance away. Don’t get fooled into thinking it is only one or two club-lengths away. If taking relief from a very large puddle of casual water, the nearest point of relief may be 30 or more yards away. Depending on the location of the ball (through the green, on a putting green, in a bunker or on the teeing ground) and the applicable Rule (24-2, 25-1 or 25-3) you would either drop the ball within one club-length of that spot (through the green or in a hazard) or place the ball at that spot (when the ball lies on the putting green). Remember, knowing and following the Rules of Golf can assist you in avoiding unnecessary penalties and help you to enjoy this great game of golf even more.

Why Can't I Use a Different Ball? In taking relief from a cart path, a player wanted to exchange his original golf ball for a different one because this one just didn’t “feel” right. Regrettably, I had to inform him that Rules would not allow him to switch to a different ball when his original was still available when taking relief from a cart path. One of the basic tenets of the game is that you start the hole with a certain ball and you finish the hole with that same ball unless the Rules allow you to substitute a ball. Once you finish that hole, you can change to a different ball to begin another hole. Some Rules, such as the Water Hazard Rule or the Unplayable Ball Rule, allow you to substitute a ball during play of a hole. This is generally done by dropping or placing a ball other than the one you played from the teeing ground of that hole. The reason being is that if your ball is in the middle of a lake or stuck up in a tree, it would be unreasonable to ask you to swim to the middle of the lake or climb the tree to retrieve your original ball. Also, at times when your original ball may not be immediately recoverable, the Rules will allow you to substitute a ball during play of a hole. For instance, in dropping away from a cart path your ball deflects off the edge of the cart path and into a water hazard or under some steps where you cannot easily retrieve it within a few seconds. You would then be allowed to substitute without penalty. Another Rule that allows substitution is Rule 5-3; Ball Unfit for Play. In that Rule, if the ball has become visibly cut, cracked or out of shape during play of a hole, you may substitute another ball. Finally, Ball Lost or Out of Bounds; Provisional Ball (Rule 27) also allows you to substitute another ball when your ball has become lost. That one makes sense for obvious reasons. If you do substitute a ball when the Rules do not allow, you incur the general penalty for the Rule that does not allow the substitution. In the first mentioned incident, you would incur the general penalty for the cart path Rule (Rule 24-2b) and would lose the hole in match play or incur a two stroke penalty in stroke play. Remember, use the definitions, index, or the table of contents to find the correct Rule that applies to the situation and follow the Rules of Golf to help yourself to enjoy the game of golf.

Rest in Peace our Friend

Rest In Peace our friend Dr. Henry W. Fricke, Jr. or as we all know him “FRICK” passed last night in a car accident. There are no words to begin to express our deep sorrow. All of us Scott, Randy, and myself, our Boatwright Interns past and present, MGA Directors and you the players will miss him horribly. He has touched so many of our lives. He spent this last weekend at the lake with Erin, his daughter and his grandaughters and then with all of us at the Father Son Championship at The Club at Porto Cima. He enjoyed every second of that. He has always said that is one of his favorite weekends of the season! I would like to share a quote that he shared with me while he was battling cancer earlier this year. HOPE. Start each day with it. But, more importantly, end each day with ACCEPTANCE of whatever happened. Then go on from there. We love you Frick! God Speed. And thanks for sending down the rain today. We know you had a hand in it. HE SO LOVED ALL OF YOU!

ASGCA View of the State of the Game of Golf

ASGCA Members Share Viewpoints on State-of-the-Game

Roundtable sparks discussion on growing the game, course rankings, planning and more

BROOKFIELD, Wis. – At the recent Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas, several American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) members shared their views on some of the industry’s top issues. The discussion took place during the event’s annual “Trends in Contemporary Golf Course Architecture” presentation moderated by ASGCA President Rick Phelps and featuring ASGCA Past President Damian Pascuzzo; Gil Hanse, ASGCA; and Jerry Lemons, ASGCA Associate.

On growing the game…
Jerry Lemons: “Everyone needs to ask, ‘What first made you fall in love with golf?’ From there, work on making golf fun for all, affordable, accessible to anyone and then you are making business sense.”

Damian Pascuzzo: “Part of the attraction is that I can play with the same equipment and on the same courses as the very best players in the world. I will never get together with my friends and play baseball at Fenway Park, but I can play Pebble Beach and TPC.”

On the value of golf course rankings…
Gil Hanse: “Rankings are more a popularity contest than a true evaluation of architecture. Rankings fill magazine pages in the offseason, but most people buy golf magazines for instructions and features, not rankings.”

Pascuzzo: “Reading about rankings is no substitute for going out and seeing the great golf courses. It’s like just reading about great works of art instead of going out and seeing them firsthand.”

On course superintendent’s participation in the design process…
Lemons: “The superintendent serves as the owner’s liaison and is often one of the owner’s best investments in a project. A good superintendent can assist in quality control and is an extra set of eyes for the architect.”

Pascuzzo: “The architect and superintendent need to work well together. Before even working with a superintendent, the architect may have hundreds of conversations about the project’s vision, goals and objectives, and meetings with government officials from all over, including the Environmental Protection Agency or Federal Aviation Administration.”

One standard design tip for any project…
Lemons: “Design for when times are bad rather than when times are good. As budgets decrease, some with over-the-top maintenance designs are suffering. They are looking for ways to decrease maintenance dollars and that is tough to do.”

Hanse: “When looking at Master Planning or renovations, you need to work with the superintendent. Discuss if it will cost more to maintain the course, and ask if members agree to the changes, even if it means a change in their dues. Communication is crucial.”

Some Great info on golf In Branson

Branson, Missouri Emerging as Major Golf Destination: Top Five Courses to Play

By Brian Wright, Yahoo! Contributor NetworkFeb 14, 2:14 pm EST

Spring is just about a month away, and for golfers looking for a new golf destination to explore, the Branson area, located in southern Missouri's Ozark Mountains, is an option you shouldn't overlook.

There are a dozen golf courses - some with top-shelf designers such as Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus, and ties to golf legends like Payne Stewart - all in close proximity, and all with reasonable rates. The majority of Branson area golf courses are carved from the beautiful Ozark Mountains, and these courses will forever be etched in your memory bank once you play them.

The Branson area has long been known for its plethora of music shows. And, although 76 Highway, which winds through the bright lights of Branson's Music Row, can become congested at times, the various well planned, four-lane, alternate routes through and around the area's popular attractions offer a quick trek to your golfing destination.

In recent years, Branson has quietly become perhaps the best golf destination in the Midwest. In fact, it might well be one of the top 10 golf destinations in the nation.

Don't take this statement lightly. A locale must have key elements such as quantity and quality of courses, a wide variety of lodging and entertainment options, and easy accessibility, to even be considered a golf destination.

For many golfers, it's the after-golf activities that make a destination great. Like other top golf locales around the country, Branson features the key elements necessary to be among the elite. And unlike some of the nation's other fine golf destinations, the ancillary activities are equal to the golf - and the golf in Branson is fantastic.

"The variety of courses definitely makes Branson an appealing golf destination," says Bill Hasler, general manager at LedgeStone Country Club. "It's a great trip for buddies, couples, families, and golf groups. If you are looking to play three or four rounds during your stay, the variety of courses we have can accommodate the needs of most anyone. And there's a lot of things to do when you get done playing golf for the day."

Indeed. Branson features a large variety of lodging options including stay and play golf packages, and the area is also unique in that it offers world-class entertainment. Recreational activities include Table Rock Lake, one of America's greatest fishing and boating lakes. Quality dining and shopping are also abundant in Branson.

"Branson is just far enough South to offer a milder climate," says Hasler. "You'll be playing mountain golf, something you don't really think of with golf in the State of Missouri. We offer everything you need for a quick weekend getaway or a week-long adventure."

Here are my top five picks for places to play golf in the Branson area - and why.

1. Branson Creek Golf Club

Branson Creek Golf Club is simply outstanding. This 18-hole layout can hold its own with any championship course in the country. Designed by architect Tom Fazio, Branson Creek is the premiere golf course in the State of Missouri as it calls attention to the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains. Branson Creek Golf Club has held the No. 1 Public Course rating in Missouri since 2001 for both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

2. LedgeStone Country Club

Golf Digest called LedgeStone "a masterpiece of mountain golf architecture" and awarded the facility a 4-Star rating in their 2008/2009 Best Places to Play category. Spectacular scenery accentuates the hilly terrain and dense forests that border virtually all of the narrow Zoysia fairways. LedgeStone is truly Ozark Mountain golf at its finest. Open for public play, LedgeStone offers visitors a country club experience - complete with on-site lodging, grille, practice range, and award-winning pro shop. Located in StoneBridge Village, just minutes from Silver Dollar City.

3. Murder Rock Golf & Country Club

If you arrive via air at the Branson Airport, you can be on the first tee at Murder Rock within minutes. This 18-hole championship golf course enhances the magnificent landscape of the Ozark Mountains, incorporating the natural beauty of the land with lush fairways and pristine greens. Just south of Branson, and just across the road from Branson Creek Golf Club, Murder Rock Golf and Country Club provides expansive and dramatic views from every vantage point. Great course - magnificent clubhouse.

4. Thousand Hills Golf Resort

Located in the heart of Branson, this Golf Digest award-winning golf course is the most unique in the area. Built around a meandering creek and large rock outcroppings, you will truly experience the beauty of the Ozarks. A relaxed family atmosphere and great service make for a great day of golf at this popular resort course. Beautiful landscaping, nightly rentals on the property, and central location make this a must play course during your visit.

5. Payne Stewart Golf Club

The Payne Stewart Golf Club is a tribute course honoring the late Payne Stewart and is Branson's newest golf product. Located just minutes from Branson Landing, which offers restaurants, shopping and entertainment on Lake Taneycomo. The Payne Stewart Golf Club offers 18 holes of championship golf, and is quickly becoming a contender for one of the best courses in the state. The highlight of this facility is the vast array of Payne Stewart memorabilia - a shrine if you will - to one of golf's most colorful, and successful players.

Branson, MO, is within a day's drive if you live in America's heartland. The recently opened Branson Airport offers daily non-stop and connecting flights from many major airports. For more information on golf in Branson, MO, visit www.explorebranson.com.

Brian Wright is a sports journalist and long-time member of the Golf Writers Association of America. Wright lives in Overland Park, KS, and plays most of his golf in the Branson area.
